CBSE Class XII Organic Chemistry Test Flowchart

Right after an update of the qualitative salt analysis cheatsheet (with all its analysis-y goodness in lesser number of pages), comes another useful one – for organic chemistry. I’d like to thank Rach for sending the base document in for this; but I did make a few changes to ensure that the test results were more foolproof.

Bear in mind that this is NOT a cheatsheet, it’s a flowchart; and therefore it doesn’t list all the tests for each type of organic compound. I feel it’s quite unnecessary, because it practicals, all you have to identify the damn thing, rest of the stuff which needs to be written in the paper can be obtained via, ahem, ‘collaboration with fellow beings’. πŸ˜‰

Anyway, the whole idea of this flowchart is to give you a quick way to what your unknown organic compound is. Do bear in mind that you need to conduct the tests exactly in the order listed in the flowchart to minimize chances of error – because for many of these tests there are exceptions which need to be taken care of (and which I have).

Feedback / suggestions would be appreciated, either for this one, and / or the new version of the salt analysis cheatsheet.

Hey what’s the difference between Effervescence of hydrogen and brisk effervescence of CO2??

And what is the solubility in HCl?? I think you should explain that in your next version..

Hydrogen gives effervescence i.e bubbles are generated when you add sodium metal to any hydrogen compound.

Whereas when you add dil.sulphuric acid to carbonates, you will see whites fumes of CO2 while has a sooothing smell…!!!

hey ankur, im kshitij i’ve been reading your blog since quite some time, thnks for the salt analysis sheet that was really a life saver..few days ago in my prac.
and if u dont mind i wanted to ask u somethinhg bout sat? u gave the sat I & II tests right?…what’s the level of actual papr like?i saw some of the mocks…but they were really vhild’s play..and can we give SAT I after 12?
plz help dude!

@Kshitij: SAT 1 / 2 tests are easy, no doubt about that – but the scoring curve is taxing. Just getting FOUR questions wrong in a section could mean your score tumbling down more than 100 points. Again, the curves are different. Since the scaled score you get out of 800 is relative to others’ performance, you could get 800/800 in SAT Math 2 for a lower raw score (number of questions correct) than say, physics; but the same is not true for Math Level 1 (where even if you get 48/50 you may only get 690/800). It’s similar for SAT Reasoning to – just 2-3 questions wrong can send your score crashing in each category by 50-100 points in the scaled tally.

hey.this is mimi. I read your blogs and I wanted to ask you if you could tell me something about taking up mathematics honours after class 12.

I am an average student and scored 89% in class X. I am quite could at maths and always get above 97. I really like this subject and want to do the honours. But some people told me that its damn tough and meant for the brilliants….What do you think? Please tell me what to do.

I think that if you really like mathematics then you should take up that course. What you are interested in matters more. ‘Damn tough’ is a relative benchmark to who’s speaking, so if you’ve been doing good at school there’s no reason you’re going to find it ‘tough’ later.

hi ankur thanks yar for the cheatsheet, organic flowchart yar they are awesomely cool man

u rock with your chemistry projects

Is it nessecary to take up engineering if you want to do something in computers to get a decent pay packet?
thanks

No, but you need to be ready to learn and work hard yourself to gain experience. You may not get the same pay packet initially, but if your work is good then experience eventually wins out.

can you pls tell where can i find 12 cbse board chem pracs coz wen i typed that on google this appeared and it seems dat you r already helpin so mny people thought you could help me as well πŸ™‚
