Action and thrills seem to be distant fantasy in this film. It’s 1 hour 55 minute running time appears to be about 1 hour 55 minutes too long. And, the actors seem hell bent on making this a comedy movie.
So, you have Nic Cage playing a hot shot stunt biker, Johnny Blaze who sells his soul to the Devil (Peter Fonda) to save his father from dying of cancer. But, his father does die-he’s killed by the Devil so that (as he tells Johnny) “nothing comes between you and me…” (is he gay or what??). What follows is some mumbo-jumbo about a lost contract which carries a lot of power. Enough to let the possessor rule Earth (or some such corny stuff…). Thrown into this chase for this moronic contract is the Devil’s son (Wes Bently) and his nincompoopic henchmen (whose costumes and make up seem to have been inspired by some cheap Halloween party).
How can one have a super-hero movie without a bimbette? Played to perfection by Eva Mendes, the character of Roxanne has nothing to do in the movie save act as bait.
Directed by Mark Steven Johnson, the much despised director of (trashy) movies like Daredevil and Elektra, Ghost Rider is passable at best. Not so much because of the story (or the lack of it), or the visual effects ($120 million were reportedly spent on this movie, none of which seems to have made it to the effects department), or the music (only decent part of the movie), OR the acting (all the actors try acting suave and menacing but fall flat on their much kicked asses), but because a mixture of all the above doesn’t make one helluva lovely movie!!
And this, my dear readers, is the point where our reviewer Rach got bored, and left his post. That hypocrite, he keeps on telling ME to make longer movie reviews, and can’t even complete his own. :p
