The 79th Annual Oscars were announced, and it again went to show that I’m better at predicting winners than Rach. You might remember my Best of 2006 list, and Rach’s list, well, most winners were on MINE. Muhahahahahaha.
A bit I have to speak then, for my Best Predictor Among GQ and Rach award:
- I am better at predicting. Ha! That’s because instead of judging movies by stupid critic reviews, I actually watch them, not like Rach, who goes according to critics, and doesn’t watch movies until he saves enough to buy its VCD, apparently, because it’s ‘fun to tear off the plastic wrapping’.
- The Departed won, and won BIG. Naturally. It was a good movie, and on top of that, Martin Scorcese, who also won Best Director, had a HUGE amount of sympathy vote behind him. Five times unlucky, I never expected the Academy members to give him the thumbs down. It won four, Best Motion Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay and Film Editing. It’s a GREAT movie. Even Eeshan (holding cranberry juice) will agree to that.
- Happy Feet won the Best Animated Feature Film. I knew it would, despite people rooting for Cars on Yahoo! Oscars. Nobody can resist the Dark Force (along with shades of white and yellow) of cute li’l penguins. Rach’s mistake in dismissing animated films – he watches boring ones with a moral, I wacth the funny ones. Nobody can ever hate funny films.
- No, Hans Zimmer didn’t win for Da Vinci Code, in fact, he wasn’t even NOMINATED, contrary to what Rach (wrongly) claim(ed)s.

I think it did. I picked up a copy of PC World this month and there’s an article on the visual effects in Pirates…
O yeah??!! Then who deserved it? Maybe The Covenant then?
Man, PotC had the best god-dman graphix there were this year.
And anyway, the best pic award for departed was also bcoz of sympathy votes.
Babel was much much better.
And yeah, tearing the wrapping off and seeing a new disc for the first time IS FUN!!!
It’s not simply sympathy votes man. It’s simply a person like you who doesn’t watch movies and passes a judgment on them. Look, I’ve seen (parts of) Babel too – it sucked and it was boring. And it’s not about gore, ‘The Departed’ is totally about the story.
Listen, Babel wasn’t abt bore, it was abt sentiment and I believe, it was the kind of movie the world needs at this moment- abt human connection.
