Yahoo! Maps finally comes to India! And a real big void has now started filling up. Till now, the only major company that had an India offering was Google Maps. And then there’s MapMyIndia.com, which had a Code Warrior among it’s core team. Well, now you can add another one to the list – Yahoo! India Maps.
The first thing that you’ll notice is that it loads WAY faster than Google Maps. Similar to it, it offers three views – Map, Satellite and Hybrid (which is a combination of the earlier two). The searches, the correction, and the loading times are pretty quick. You WILL notice one thing though – the detail is much lesser right now in satellite view. Yahoo! does plan to shift to a higher resolution soon. Also, businesses and other features aren’t that numerous, and the map mostly consists of mosques and temples right now, but it’s getting there. Most localities I tried out found a match.
Yahoo! India Maps has started recently, so don’t expect any fireworks or much comparison right now, but I’m pretty sure that given time, it’ll be a much better product than Google Maps. Last heard, it was given 10-km detours for a 10 minute walk down the road in Australia for certain routes. MSN Maps is even better – in Netherlands it was showing some routes which had hundreds of kilometers of detour.

I no longer have any problem in your ending each post with a link to your blog. Because after all the effort I’d put into this, it seems to be going waste slowly.
Yahoo uses mapmyindia.com’s maps only , just organises them much better. Arun must be happy !

@Abhishek: Link to my blog at the end of post. LOL. And Cmd+C? Hmm, a show off, aren’t you? 😉 Revieware doesn’t seem to be working, sort of. I can’t call many of the post under the review blahtegory here as ‘reviews’, but it does have more than Revieware. But really dude, I’d like to work on this closely with you after 12th, the idea is good. For now, yeah, maybe I’ll try to post more on Revieware.

Yahoo cant do anything itself, can it? It has to be late and needs some pushing.
As for Yahoo! buying the data from someone else, don’t get me started. Neither does Google launch, operate, and then get data for Google Maps – it buys it from other companies. That too, it got a push after seeing Keyhole was a bright idea.
Hey… Yahoo maps uses flash, which is a closed standard. Whereas, Google Maps uses Javascript which is actually an Open Standard..
(Whoops.. that Open Source project seems to be getting on me..!!)
Anyway, Google bhi kar lega, although I must appreciate the Yahoo India Maps service. 😉
