Funny Things People Say

A quick post on some funny things people end up saying sometimes. Ah, I got reminded of this after speaking to Prashanth recently. It’s a few incidents really, and the humor might be a bit hard to get, so, despite a lot of me wanting not to give the explanations, I decided to give them. Otherwise, people will ended leaving my blahg disgusted thinking ‘Why was this tagged as Funny Bone?’

There was once when I was discussing my blog when Rach asked who Abhishek (Nandakumar) was. Till I told him, he used to think that it was Abhishek Mitra, our last year’s Quiz Club President. Here’s how the conversation went:

Rach – How did Abhishek Mitra get so tech savvy?
GQ – Why do you say that?
R – He comments a lot on your blahg…
GQ – Oh, that’s my pal Abhishek Nandakumar. You know, xAbhishek.com guy…
R – ex-Abhishek? Why, what’s his name now?

If you didn’t get that, Rach thought I was saying that guy’s name was Abhishek earlier and now is something else.

This is THE best (worst?) language goof-up EVER! I was speaking to my pal from St George’s School [name withheld] after my National Science Olympiad results came out.

GQ – Hey you know what? My National Science Olympiad results are out and the percentile score is 99.6!
He Who Must Not Be Named – You mean…you haven’t your result yet, right? What are you happy about then?

Didn’t get it? Neither did I for quite some time, and I kept staring at his face blankly. And then, it struck me that he must have thought that I was saying “the percent I’ll score”. It took me quite some time back then to stop laughing…

And then, there were some funny ideas I came up with. One was inspired by Rach, because whenever he finds something good, he says ‘Ossummmm!’ (like that). It gave me the idea of Ossum Possum the Awesome Opossum. What exactly this little creature will do, I’ve no idea. Maybe he’ll be the mascot of the quiz site I eventually want to start. Maybe he’ll just vanish into oblivion.

The other one also came up when I speaking to Rach once about blogging. Instead of saying ‘publish it’ I ended up saying ‘publishit it’. Which gives me the idea of a new word, ‘publishitting’, for all things utterly rubbishy (note – any association of this to certain low traffic blogs will be vigorously denied and absolutely true). I want to write The Hitchhiker’s Guide to Desktop Publishitting (or maybe Publishitting for Dummies) one day, although what hitchhiking may have to do with publishitting is something even I haven’t figured out yet…
