State of the Youth

The following post was guest blogged by Rockie.

Every youth in this country aspires to become either a doctor or an engineer one day. While growing up all these aspirations shatter to pieces. As you grow up you realize that science is not the wonderful thing it always seemed. If you can’t fucking remember the atomic number of Platinum then you don’t have a fucking right to be in science. Yes, science is all about cramming up. Rarely do Indian institutions give a chance to the students to utilize their brains. You bloody mug up and you get through to IIT. What about those who see science not as a mere subject but as a never ending source of joy. What about those who don’t want to study science just for the purpose of earning money? India’s education system is fucked up. If you don’t get 90%+ marks then you are not fit to get a good job. What about those fucking people who can’t cram and yet have a genuine liking towards science. Do they just accept defeat and rot? I bloody am fed-up of this whole system. What I share with you is my own case. I have a genuine interest in maths, physics and computer. But even if I grow two more balls I can’t cope up with chem. So what the fuck should I do? Should I give up my dream of studying the sciences? I can’t even think of getting into IIT because of my chemistry marks. Is this fair? I bloody try all my best cramming up Chemistry but in the end I just can do it. I fail and then my parents shout at me. What am I supposed to do if my memory isn’t so good? Should I just give up on life? Because in the end if I have to study anything except Science I may just as well end my life. Do the people who teach at India’s Premier Institutions ever look at their surroundings and wonder about all the science in them. The protons, neutrons, electron and other particles. I fucking do and I wonder how it all works. I yearn to question the basic facts of life and nature. Doesn’t this fucking question count? Don’t I at least deserve to get my answers? Does anybody fucking care about a fucking nobody? So I bid Fucking Adieu to the bullshit happening in India. Does anybody dare to raise a voice?

I’ve blogged about this a couple of times and all I’ve got is hate mail from IIT alumni.

But something is wrong as far as the IITs go. The first being the huge difference in academic level of the CBSE Boards (hah! another academic blunder) and the JEE.

And you top it of with reservations and the perfect suicide recipe for normal guys without a low caste or exceptional cramming abilities is ready. But I think we should ignore this recipe. Amity is doing good work… they take an English test interview. That might work for you if you’re not too worried about placements, they’ve excellent infrastructure and faculty. The placements are something like 3-5 lakhs P.A. on an average. Then there’s Symbiosis Pune with BBA (IT)

Good Luck with whatever you choose!

ROFL, best joke ever, Amity’s avg placements 3-5 lakhs, i doubt if more than 2-3 jobs are of that value from 1000s of students.

@Rahul: True, not all people who study at Amity are stellar academics. However, the current system isn’t exactly a model system either.

@Maneel: I’m not saying that a difference in academic level of JEE and CBSE shouldn’t be there, but at the same time they need to have far more seats too.

How bout NTU? Ive heard they dont have chem!! and am pretty sure they’re approach to science is very different! They don care so much about jobs am sure.

I mean, only till we find a way to fight back the system. Am in if anyone has any plans!

@Aviatrix: Yeah, that’s what I told him. In NTU, you only have to give chem if you choose for chemical engineering (which I didn’t, because I suck at it). NTU again has its own issues though – namely, your class 10th English marks; plus the fact that there’s only a fixed number of Indian students they take in every year.

If you are good at Physics, Maths, Computers then you can do better in life than all those crammers who get in to IIT. Many of the IITians after passing out do not pursue engineering. They go in for more lucrative(?) things like Management. If you have love for Science then pursue science. Make the right moves and keep enjoying what you do. There are many institutes in pure and applied sciences which are not getting worthy students because of the madness called as Engineering and Medical. All the best. There are many people in this country and world who are happy and successful without having passed from IIT. Provided you have your success defined properly.
