Cradle Sports / Aagman Quiz

The school and open quiz to be conducted by Cradle Sports was held yesterday. A brilliant quiz, and my first ‘Parnab’ quiz. I reached in the morning because I wanted to see the school edition of the quiz too (to get an idea about what was to come in the open quiz). At first when I reached the venue I was confused as to whether there was a quiz. I finally found that it was in one of the other halls in the Siri Fort Auditorium compound. The school edition saw a very enthusiastic response, going by the jam packed auditorium. And note this isn’t like Times of India Fun-da-Mental or HT InQuizitive where most of the people are cheering teams; these people in the hall that day were quizzers who wanted to be there. So it’s nice to see such a large turnout. I saw quite a few people I knew there. Unfortunately, DPS VK couldn’t make it because pre-Boards are going on and most of the quiz team is either in 10th or 12th.

I missed the school quiz prelims but I got to see the school quiz semi-finals and final. Lots of DPS RKP teams qualifying, apart from the extremely capable team from DPS Dwarka which had Utkarsh and mini Ankit Sud. Also nice to see that Sardar Patel Vidyalaya find talented replacements for Vinayak Sapru and Pulkit Gupta. St Columba’s School is always a force to reckon with, and they proved it by winning the quiz (Chirag’s team). DPS Noida’s team also seems promising with Rishav except that he’s way too cocky to make it to the top anytime soon.

Surprisingly, the open quiz saw lesser response than the school quiz! But it was nice to see a lot of school teams stick around and at least try the prelims. I was participating in the open quiz, teamed up with Prateek Vijayavargia, Chandan Shahi (runner-up of Brand Equity Quiz 2008), and Manazir Wasi. The prelims were tough with a large gap between the toppers of the prelims and the ones after them. Our team scraped through onto the finals. We totally got PWND at that stage. Except by the SPV team which didn’t score, but you gotta give them credit that they made it to the finals too. The finals had a lot of old Bollywood stuff which nobody on our team was good at. Between the other colleges teams who do bother to keeps tabs of that kind of stuff, the competition was quite close.

From L to R: Prateek Vijayavargia, Parnab Mukherjee, Jimi Hendrix (Prashanth), Arindam Bhattacharya (Cradle Sports), Unkown Cradle Sports Guy, Anirudh Sharma (Cradle Sports)

That brings me to the question which people interested in quizzing would have been dying to know when reading this article – how was Parnab Mukherjee? I admit, I’ve ‘heard a lot of stuff’ about him in past on many quiz blogs but it was nothing like that! Look, I can’t talk about the past because without having been present at those quizzes I can’t pass a judgment myself. I can talk of what I saw at the quiz yesterday, and what I saw was an excellent quiz. I believe the attendees who were there will also agree with me. The questions were good and didn’t come across anything which was ‘outrageous’ in the sense that people talk of. It was an extremely well-balanced quiz, with no team getting too easy questions. Most of the questions were workout-able, which is the proper style to go for to get students interested in quizzing.

Parnab Mukherjee’s feat is even more impressive when you consider that he’s recalling questions from his memory. If you’re a quizzer, you know exactly how difficult it is to recall even ten questions in succession at a moment’s notice. More so when you have to do a balanced quiz. As far as I gathered, the questions were not ‘made up’, as some people have claimed earlier about his quizzes. I randomly checked up a few questions which I remembered and I didn’t find one wrong. So as I said, I don’t know about the past experiences others claim to have had, but what I saw at yesterday’s quiz was a good quiz.

parnab-mukherjee-2After the quiz got over, I got to interact with Parnab a little longer over a late ‘lunch’ (if you can call it that) we had with the Cradle Sports team. (Prateek and Prashanth were there too.) Arindam Bhattacharya of Cradle Sports, himself a quizzer (he competed against Aditya Mubayi in his school days) is a really friendly guy. It’s a good thing that he sought feedback from the student community throughout the quiz. In Arindam and Parnab Delhi has two guys who are truly passionate about quizzing. We had a nice chat where Parnab spoke of how instead of preparing by reading quiz books students can learn simply by knowing more about their surroundings. He gave a nice example of how much history you can associate simply while going from point A to point B in Delhi. Prashanth, who’s from Hyderabad, asked him to show a similar example using a route between two places in Hyderabad – and Parnab came up a perfectly valid trivia question (which Prashanth admits is true). I hope in a future quiz maybe the Cradle Sports guys can arrange for Parnab to have a short talk before / after the quiz. Nobody is saying that you should prepare for quizzes only by zipping through Delhi roads, but the main concept behind preparing for quizzes as natural process instead of a ‘forced’ thing using books is something students should at least be made aware of.

You can check out an old archive of questions by Parnab Mukherjee here (ZIP, ~805 KB). One thing’s for sure – any future school quiz by him would be worth going for school quizzers.

We were ow3ed! We got some 7 in the prelims… and the cut off was 8.5 :(( And we could answer at least three more.

Lets see if you get this:
Who was the first Indian to play in the Bundes Liga?

Dude, don’t ask me sports questions. Totally. šŸ™‚ Sports and old, nay, any era of Bollywood is what I totally suck at in quizzing. I was quite good at sports stuff a few years back, but am out of touch with that now.

I knew Vishwanathan Anand, quite easily šŸ™‚
I liked the sports qns in the Quiz a lot, somewhat my specialisation, but i tripped at a lot of them also, because they were the unusual ones.

Hey ankur….so i saw u and didnt even realise it was the famous ankur banerjee……well…do u knw me….well can u pls..tell me…wht do u mean by am cocky…..ur experienced …u will knw if i am gud or..not…..our actual team which has members…in 10th are buzy wid prebds….is really good…so long…then…

OK, I didn’t mean that as ‘insult’ or anything. šŸ™‚ It’s just that I was reading your blog before I wrote this post, and I came across ‘crappy school whose name I cannot remember’. Dude! That’s not the way to refer to your competitors, especially when they came third! You could easily have written that sentence without the ‘crappy’ adjective and everything would have been as it should be. You showed that you have a lot of potential by topping the prelims – that too out of so many school teams – and your performance during the semi-finals was great (I saw that). So either you’re angry at the result or you went in too overconfident, and with Dipsites it generally turns out to be the latter. No offence intended to anyone, but I’ve seen this to be true in many cases where Dipsites don’t find the letters ‘D’, ‘P’, and ‘S’ in quick succession in some school’s name and write off as insignificant. Believe me, I’ve seen exceptional quizzing from some ‘insignificant’ teams too.

Quizzing’s not a battle, at the end of the day, it’s just a quiz! So don’t underestimate your competitors. You still have two exciting years of quizzing ahead of you to prove your talent, make friends in the quizzing circuit, and keep the reputation of DPS Noida’s quiz club high.

sry…i really regret it….am very srry srsly……..btw..i didnt take offence ..iknw wht u said is quite true….again pls pardon me…..am ashamed od myself……ya…ur write insignificant skools r gud quizzers …thts true…but u knw wht,,,…we were just too happy reachn the finals tht we didnt….focus ourselves…like am really inspired by saurabh ..hes the best of the best..along with prateek…too…but i assure u this wnt happen again…havn hrd so much bout u..and takn a lot out of ur archieves……i look to u as 1 of my idols….so pls…help me be a better quizzer in all respects…

Yes, Rishav – You should not take Ankur’s comment in bad light – Even I was shocked to read ur post on the blog – “Some Crappy School”. But anyways, we all make mistakes. Ankur is bang on! We should be respecting all quizzards equally, and you have the potential and enthusiasm to be a great quizzer. Its not only the Columba’s and The DPSes who quiz, there r many more school who do and make a mark, sometimes even without the support of the school, teachers and overcoming many more obstacles. The Delhi Geek and Quizzing community needs to learn the fact that after all, everyone has their own strengths and we need to have good competition amongst ourselves, but that should not translate into enmity and much more. I see this in many of the Computer Symposiums too, which is very sad. And New Era or some other schools may be insignificant to some, but for some they are “significant” also.

Anyways, Congrats on topping the prelims – Great Job Done! Also, dude pls dont embarrass me by saying “One of Delhi’s best quizzers” on ur blog post – I am not. I am just a quizzer who aims to do well.
I suppose DPS Dwarka (Utkarsha’s team gave some brilliant answers esp. on India) were the best team of the day.

Anyways, the Quiz was brilliant! How abt posting some Finals qns and discussing them – I know we all dont remember, but still can try…remembering some gems!

Two from my side:
Which cricketer’s autobiography is titled “Cutting Edge”? Ans. Javed Miandad

In which city would you come across the “Ram Advani” Booksellers? Ans. Lucknow

OK, dude, you’re now embarrassing me. You don’t have to apologize so much! Stuff like this happens at times, so don’t agonize over this too much. Do your best in a quiz, I’m sure you’ll do well with your talent.

Which cricketer captained his team to ranji trophy win..and also coached bengal and Baroda??
a) Paras Mhambray
Which book won 3 bookers.??
a) Midnights children-booker,booker of bookersand the booker of the century
btw..thnx..for ur comments..am new to this circuit…best of luck u too…

Dude were you on drugs or something?? It sucked!

I mean, how workout able is the question; “who is the chief minister of andhra pradesh?”?? The questions were really sad. I mean chori, choir excuse me? That guy didn’t have any taste at all. In short I’ve been to waaay better quizzes.

Dude, the question was – Who is the Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh? Andhra Pradesh wud have been 2 easy. Yes, the question was not definitely workoutable but I guess the sole aim of the question was to increase awareness of the North-eastern Part of the country – It has too often been ignored by students and our countrymen. People know “Who is the CM of Maharashtra or maybe UP? Then, why not North-Eastern states as well? I told Mr. Arindam this and he said that – All questions of a quiz cant be workoutable, some have to be the usual GK stuff.

Ofcourse, you are entitled to you opinion. Have you been to many General Quizzes ;-)?

I have to agree with Prateek. If it was Andhra Pradesh (which it wasn’t, it was Arunachal), then you’re bloody well supposed to know it as a general quizzer especially after the Satyam scandal where the Andhra government has been in the news. Even otherwise, I’m sure any general quizzer would at least know the chief ministers of all Indian states except north-east WITHOUT having to rote-learn them. You just have to read the newspaper.

I also agree with Prateek that you just can’t have a quiz where ONLY workout-able questions are there. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a tech quiz or general, some level of fact-based stuff has to be there. Heck, if you don’t know the facts then you can’t do connect / workout stuff.

Although even I don’t know much about the north-east, I think it’s commendable that someone is trying to give some importance to it. There was even a quiz show a few years back, hosted by Derek O’Brien, called Bharath Ke 8 (‘8’ being pronounced as ‘aath’, not ‘eight’) which was solely on the north-eastern states of India. We do need more stuff like these; NE is a part of India after all!

Look it was a quiz not united india brainwashing championship. That person has done nothing special, he’s just another elected official. There wasn’t any merit in the questions at all, but that’s my two cents.

look …dude..either..ur a nitwit..or god knows wht…whts ur prob.if he wishes…to ask any qs..or ru jst sore tht u cdnt answer it….well….if thts d reason ur not even wrth 2 cents

What should or should not be in quiz is a never-ending discussion and what’s ‘correct’ will keep varying from person-to-person. That’s my two cents. šŸ™‚

@ Anuj – You are entitled to your own 2 cents…
As Ankur said, it differs from person-to-person.

There is not any Delhi Quizzing Society as such. But there is a club called “Kutub Quizzers”.

I have already thought of this, but in a city like Delhi its always a difficult task to get venues, also interested people on specific times due to long distances. But yes surely we can start it, maybe once we get to college. Maybe Ankur can start off rite now. Wotsay?

c…it if we srt off the setup this year only…it will take time…to flourish…we can take the help of these cradle sports people…as..off now..let us srt off wid membership…and ways of funding and and our objectives…we dont need a venue abhi…..but i am very serious about it…Ankur can do a lot abhi for it..we can assist him for now..but ince we are in college we can be his partners….we can stay in touch through a website..we dont need to meet everyday..but if we can collaborate woth cradle sports….then we can be a part of the organizing committees…and man am so excited just thinking about such a society….well..discuss more when ankur sees our proposal…gives his views on it..

I agree. A society which is not as politicised as Kutub Quizzers is needed for Delhi. We could definitely come up with something along with Cradle Sports. I don’t know about the timing though. I’ll be busy in February with BarCamp / WordCamp, during which time you guys will have exams. After that, if I sit for some entrance exams I’ll be busy with them.

However, this is an excellent idea. Maybe we can start off on a small scale with an online forum at first. You both can moderate after your exams get over and I’ll keep on chipping in from time to time. How about that? This could possibly in association with Cradle Sports.

Yes, quite correct. I am all for it. Maybe we cud start off by giving it a name and a motto. And then start off with an online group, blog, forum.
If you are just looking for online membership, you can start off on my group SportsQuiz itself.
So we looking for a group with Open Membership?
And what help do we exactly need from Cradle on this?

ya..its fine…prateek..u cntct mr arinadam….whenevr u can and tell him about this…while we work on a forum…next time they have a quiz we can set up some kiosk in the audi..where we can take in membership…about which well need to plan later…ankur..if u hav the setup to make a forum now..do so..cos…i can take out quality time everyday to do…this…but prateek cntct them asap…..and ankur..lets design the forum….ill help with whatever is needed…i hav discussed abt this tday with of my fellow quizzers…and we r all game for this..

Okay we can use the Cradle Sports Quizzes to advertise the group, you mean to say that rite?
